| Ouray,
rightfully named the "Gem of the
Rockies," is perched in the San Juan
Mountains at almost 7,700 feet. A
mystique captures you upon arriving in
this well-preserved Victorian town. Nestled in an
awesome canyon at the entrance to the majestic
San Juan Mountains, Ouray lives up to its
description as "Switzerland of
America." Not many historic
mountain towns can boast the complete
quaintness that Ouray retains.

turn-of-the-century house provides private living and
work space for writers. Two types of
accommodations are available: a studio in the house
complete with kitchenette, and private bathroom, and a charming,
fully equipped cottage behind the main house. Both
facilities include a writing desk and chair, good lighting, large
windows, private bathrooms and a private balcony/deck. The
common area in the main house features a library, and
there is wireless
Internet throughout the retreat.
The
Cascade parlor—a common living room is located in the main
house where residents can gather or snuggle in with
a good book.

The
Hayden Mountain Studio
This
studio marries the afternoon rays of sun to the
breathtaking view of Hayden Mountain. Writers find
inspiration in this sunny part on the second floor of the
house with its private deck that overlooks the country
garden. A large window provides plenty of nature
viewing. The living/sitting area is furnished with a
queen-size bed, futon, wicker chair and television set (optional). The
studio contains a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious
dining area; the bathroom has a shower/tub. The suite
occupies the back half of the upstairs. Residents
provide their own food or eat out in local restaurants.

The
Chipeta Cottage --
Your
complete privacy in the mountains! After many hours of
writing and a good sleep, awaken to a spectacular view
of the San Juan Mountains from the second floor windows
and the walk-out deck.
Decorated
in colorful Southwest style, this charming 2-story
cottage is named for Chief Ouray's wife, Chipeta.
The marriage of wood and the colorful quilt on the
queen-size beds makes for a cozy atmosphere. The
modern, fully equipped kitchen and the bathroom are on
the main floor, while the second floor is furnished with
two queen beds, working desk, easy chairs, love seat,
and television (optional). Internet access in the main
house only. Residents provide their own food or eat out.

garden exhibits a potpourri of flowers, herbs and apple
trees. Whether relaxing after long hours of writing or
enjoying an evening under the stars, this outdoor
tranquility gentles the soul. Writers can
enjoy the garden reading room in summer. |

| Location:
The facility is located in Ouray which is in
Southwestern Colorado on US Highway 550,
approximately 72 miles north of Durango and 35
miles south of Montrose. The portion of Highway
550 between Ouray and Silverton, 24 miles to the
south, has been named The Million Dollar Highway
and is part of the San Juan Skyway, one of the
most scenic and spectacular mountain drives in
North America.
Closest airport: Montrose (40 minutes).
Colorado Springs is 267 miles / 5-6 hrs and Denver
300 miles / 6-7 hours. |

attractions and activities:
If you need a break from writing, the area has
plenty to offer, especially if you like nature and
mountains. Hike in alpine splendor,
photographing the spectacular scenery and
exploring the town or soak after skiing in Ouray
Natural's Hot Spring Pool at a variety of
temperatures ranging from 96 to 106 degrees; the
pool has a lap swimming section.
